Water conservation and environmental protection specialists from 19 countries have gathered in Jiujiang city of east China's Jiangxi province, for a seminar on lake conservancy and regional development.

The four-day event will open in the county-level city of Gongqingcheng, which is administered by Jiujiang, on Saturday, the seminar's organizers said at a press conference held Friday afternoon.

Delegates from 19 countries will attend the seminar to share their experience concerning the exploration and use of lake resources, as well as discuss common problems they are facing, said Lu Baoyun, mayor of Gongqingcheng.

"Among them will be conservancy specialists with experience regarding world-famous lakes such as Baikal in Russia, Balaton in Hungary, Biwa-ko in Japan and Lake Taupo in New Zealand," he said.

Chinese specialists representing Qinghai Lake, the country's largest inland saltwater lake, and Dongting Lake, China's second-largest freshwater lake, will also attend the seminar, he said.

Besides lake conservancy, the delegates will also exchange ideas on urban development, environmental protection and the development of low-carbon industries, said Lu.

The establishment of an international lake association and signing of a joint statement on lake conservancy are also on the seminar's agenda.
